Day 18, In Winnipeg

Rest Day! I know I didn't write anything from Calgary (as it being the location of my first rest day) but I didn't really have anything...it 's a relatively big city, lots of...high rise that seemed to be only office buildings, it wasn't that...like...Vancouver. I mean I cannot compare them but still...however Winnipeg! It really seems like a city with a character. It has a little history (for a european standard, the "little" isn't bad at all!!), diverse cultural quarters and friendly atmosphere. At least in those areas I have visited. I'm sure it has bad and worse parts, but I'm here for only two days hence I only experience a very small part of it. Just like in the case of Calgary. It probably has lots of nice parts I just didn't have time to explore it. And Winnipeg finally gave me the first couple of world cup games!! Probably the last ones for a while but there is a world cup like every...four years...I'll manage to watch couple of the games I'm sure.

Szabadnap!

Day 17, Brandon to Winnipeg

The campground in Brandon was a nice one. Except the mosquitoes. Or I should probably say the mosquitoes army. And I tried to beat them by waking up really early but didn't work. Anyhow I wanted to see if I can bike directly to Winnipeg from Brandon for couple of reasons: first, I wanted to see my limitation, pushing myself as far as I can and challenge my boundaries, second I wanted to avoid the thunderstorm and strong headwind that was expected by Friday night/Saturday all day long in the area. And I don't know how but I made it. The first 125km was more or less ok, no wind at all (!!) and a nice ride overall. Forests and farms, small creeks and small towns decorated the road. And I was quite fast, thanks to one of the "best" motivation of all: the mosquitoes. Whenever I wanted to stop even for a minute they attacked. Eyes, ears, everywhere. So I didn't really stop, when I was tired I slowed down but stopping was not really an option...the last 86km was on the other hand one os the worst sections so far. The wind began, side and almost perfect headwind, like 2 days ago. And for about 5km the shoulder disappeared. It doesn't sound a lot but try it by pushing your fully loaded bike in a gravel road...for 10km I had a companion which motivate me, a guy who trained for a 100mile long mountain bike ace in Nevada...good luck to him! The rest of the 86km wasn't pleasant. At the last 30km the wind got stronger, the rain started the quality of the road got worse and my power was minimal. I stopped every 5-10km at the end. I was really really happy to see the Winnipeg sign. It gave me motivation again and here I am, in Winnipeg within the planned schedule. And the tour will continue in Ontario in two days after taking the train a little. Finally a rest day also!

Stats: 211km, 21.8km/h average

Egy ùjabb emlékezetes nap. Na nem a tájra értem. A reggel frissen indult és sok-sok szùnyoggal. Gondolom a szélcsend is elôhozta ôket. A szél is felkeveredett míg erôm elhagyott.
Vasárnap jöhet a vonat, aztán a folytatás Ontarióban!

Mai adatok: 211 km, 21.8km/ó átlag.

For me the most beautiful sign so far.
